Subject: Libraries – Remote Access Only as of March 18
Importance: High

Dear University Leaders,

This evening, we made the difficult decision to move sooner rather than later to remote-access only for the University Libraries, due to COVID-19 concerns. Our observations of students not practicing sound social distancing practices were causing concern that the libraries had become an unsafe environment for students, along with legitimate concerns for staff health.

Our library professional organizations have made statements in support of library closure to promote the health and well-being of the community as well, and closing the physical facility is now considered best practice.

We will be staffing the libraries on-site as well as having some librarians and staff working remotely. We are equipped to scan and deliver, and we will continue to support access to electronic resources, reference chat, and consultation via phone or e-mail. Our web site offers access to a robust array of resources.

Please forward this message to the faculty and staff in your schools. They are encouraged to contact subject specialists for assistance. In addition, please e-mail me regarding how we can maintain the information access you need during this trying time.

Thanks, and stay well.

Deb Ward
