Music education (MA)

This degree is a master of arts in learning, teaching and curriculum with an emphasis in music education.

This degree is part of the Music Education Program housed in the Department of Learning, Teaching and Curriculum.

The MA in music education is both research and practice based, designed to meet your needs as a music teacher. This degree may be for you if you are:

  • interested in advancing your career, knowledge and teaching skills in music education
  • pursuing research in music education
  • have aspirations to pursue a doctorate in music education

This is degree is only offered on campus and does not lead to certification.

Degree Requirements

To receive a MA in music education degree, you must complete 32 credit hours.  This includes at least 16 hours of core education/music education courses, a research seminar and a thesis.


Admission Requirements

You must meet two sets of minimum qualifications in order to be considered for admission:

A committee of faculty members reviews your application’s credentials. You are not guaranteed admission even if you meet the minimum qualifications.

In addition to completing the Graduate Studies application, you must submit the following materials to the Department of Learning, Teaching and Curriculum:

  • Unofficial transcript
  • Personal Data Sheet
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • GRE scores
  • TOEFL scores (international students only)
