Carol Gilles is an Emeritus Professor in Reading/Language Arts in the Department of Learning, Teaching and Curriculum at the University of Missouri. She was an elementary teacher and a middle level Learning Disabilities teacher for 20 years.  She is the co-author of five books, the most recent being Reading Conversations: Retrospective Miscue Analysis with Struggling Readers, grades 4-12 (with Rita Moore, 2005, Heinemann). Her latest edited volumes are Literacy Research: Theory, Method and Practice, Vol. 64 and 65 (primary editor for one section, Literacy Research Association, 2015 and 2016.) Currently she is lead editor with Dr. Lenny Sanchez for volume 66 of LR:TPM.  Dr. Gilles has authored articles in the Journal of Adolescence and Adult Literacy, Phi Delta Kappan, Teacher Education Quarterly, Action in Teacher Education, Middle School Journal, Mentoring and Tutoring, Language Arts, the English Journal and others.

She teaches middle school English/Language Arts classes for undergraduates and K-12 literacy courses for graduate students. Her research interests include talk across the curriculum, equity in assessment with a focus on Miscue Analysis and Retrospective Miscue Analysis and Induction programs.  She also is interested in children and young adult literature and works with other teachers reviewing and critiquing the latest books.
