  • Partner school principal or assigned personnel (mentor, assistant principal, etc.) should meet weekly with SYOSP students to support their learning, develop professionalism and become familiar with the school building and district.
  • In November, assign each MU SYOSP student to an individual host classroom for the spring semester. This assignment being made with input from the Adjunct Liaison, and will constitute the 16 week Spring Semester internship.

Steps in Student Progress through Program

  1. At the end of the sophomore year, students who meet minimum admission and selective admission criteria are admitted to the upper division portion of the Elementary Education program.
  2. Fall Semester of Junior Year: Complete one of two grouped sets of elementary methods courses. Submit information regarding geographic placement preference for the senior year.
  3. Spring Semester of Junior Year: Complete the other grouped set of elementary methods courses. Students are notified of district and building placement for the senior year. Attend orientation for SYOSP program late in the semester.
  4. Fall Semester Senior Year: On site in partner school building placement site for 3 full days per week. Rotate sequentially during the semester through all elementary grade levels, starting with 1st/ grade. Complete specific university courses. Single classroom placement for spring semester is finalized.
  5. Spring Semester Senior Year: Student teaching occurs in single classroom with a teacher for duration of the semester. During this time, the classroom teacher will gradually allow the student teacher intern to assume full responsibility for classroom instruction, operation & management. Near the end of the semester, the classroom teacher & student teacher intern will gradually reverse roles again.
