Drs. Abell and Friedrichsen, along with their colleague Dr. Carla Zembal-Saul from Penn State University, hosted the 2009 NARST Summer Research Institute with 23 doctoral students and  and 9 faculty mentors from across the US and from Israel and Brazil.  Participants worked intensively for one week to improve their research designs, learn about current research in the field, and build new research skills.  MU was honored to host this inaugural institute.
