  4. How should I prepare my child for the evaluation?
In general, we prefer that you refrain from telling your children that they are going to see the “doctor.” Children may associate doctors with anxiety-provoking situations, and they may become more anxious. Instead, we recommend that children know they are going to a place where they will be asked to complete questionnaires or other tests that are designed to be interesting when possible, and there will also be some talking and sometimes playing (if age appropriate). It’s best that you not ask your children to be on their best or worst behavior. We need to see their “typical” behaviors in order to have a good understanding of their needs. If you feel it’s appropriate, check with your child’s physician/psychiatrist in advance to see if it is medically appropriate for your child to work with us without his/her regular medication. Always follow your doctor’s advice about your child’s medication, but when it is possible, being able to see your child without medication will likely add to our understanding of your child’s needs. Let your child know that the evaluation may take most of the day, so they can bring books, toys, snacks, etc. to keep them busy and motivated. If children ask why they are coming to our office, it is fair to say that our office helps children be happier and more successful by asking lots of questions to figure out what they’re doing well, where they might need some extra help and how they learn best.

Evaluation Results

  1. Typically, how long does an evaluation take to complete?
Most evaluations are completed in one day. Sometimes, they are completed over the course of two half-day sessions. Depending on the type of evaluation and the unique questions to be addressed, an evaluation may need to be scheduled over a series of shorter sessions. The evaluation schedule will be established with the client and agreed upon in advance, with changes made only if necessary.

  2. When will the evaluation results be finalized and will I be able to ask questions about the results?
Once the evaluation is completed, Clinic staff will prepare a written report summarizing the evaluation results including interview information, testing results, diagnostic conclusions and customized recommendations. In most cases, the written report is completed within two weeks following the completion of the evaluation procedure. At that time, you will be contacted and a follow-up session will be scheduled to present the results, address your questions and discuss recommendations for the future.

  2. Will my health insurance help pay for Clinic-related services?
Clinic Psychologists accept benefits from most insurance companies. However, insurance companies provide varying levels of coverage for Clinic-related services. While mental health evaluations and counseling services are most typically covered at some level, some specific services may or may not be covered under the company's schedule of benefits. Individuals interested in utilizing health insurance benefits for Clinic-related services should work with Clinic staff to help determine coverage prior to scheduling the evaluation and follow preauthorization procedures.
