American Sign Language (ASL)
American Sign Language (ASL) is a foreign language used right here in the United States by millions of Deaf individuals! Learning ASL will give you the training and knowledge-base to be culturally and linguistically more sensitive to the deaf and hard of hearing population which totals more than 32 million people in the US. And the best part…ASL is now accepted by the University of Missouri to fulfill foreign language requirements for any student!
ASL courses are taught by Stephanie Logan. She is the executive director of The L.E.A.D. (Leadership through Education and Advocacy for the Deaf) Institute, which is a non-profit agency that provides mental health services and statewide support to Deaf and Hard of Hearing victims of crime. Stephanie is also a doctoral student in Counseling Psychology program. She became deaf 15 years ago as a result of contracting spinal meningitis. She attended Gallaudet University to learn ASL and has been studying the linguistics of ASL for many years. She has been teaching ASL in the community for 10 years and has been teaching ASL at MU for almost 4 years. You can contact Stephanie Logan at slogan@midamerica.net if you have additional questions.
