Russell Adventure Club located at 1800 W. Rollins Rd. The enrollment capacity at Russell Adventure Club is 130 children AM/PM. At this site there is a Site Facilitator along with 13 Site Assistants. Most of our site assistants come from the local universities in Columbia. A majority of these site assistants are education and early childhood majors. Some are studying in a related field such as Social Work or Psychology.
Russell Adventure Club meets in the school cafeteria. We also have daily access to the school's gymnasium and playgrounds. The children often get to choose between two or three areas throughout the morning and afternoon sessions.
In the mornings, a parent or an authorized adult must initial the students in on a sign-in sheet. The sheets, printed in weekly increments, have columns for the student's arrival time and for the the initials of the person bringing the student to Adventure Club. A Site Facilitator or Site Assistant will initial in the student in the afternoon; a parent or other authorized adult must initial them out in the afternoon, noting the time that they departed.
In addition to the sign in/out sheet we also use a "Where am I?" pocket charts to keep track of the students. The pocket chart has 4 categories: Outside, Cafeteria, Gym and Home. It is the students' responsibility to change their own name tag when they arrive in the morning and afternoons and when they decide to leave one area for another. They must also inform a staff member when they leave one area for another; we utilize walkie-talkies so that we may communicate with one another and ensure a student's arrival from one area to another. Each day the children participate in a system called J.O.L.T (Jumpstart Our Learning Time). This includes 2-3 weekly clubs which explore areas such as science, math, art and music. The children also have the choice to do homework, read a book or engage in educational games, building activities and technology. Children can get extra help on their homework from the Site Facilitator and/or the Site Assistants and a JOLT log is kept to track the activities that the children choose on a daily basis, this log is available upon request. Russell Adventure Club provides a safe and fun environment for children before and after school. We offer fun educational activities everyday and allow the children to choose their activities. We use a child directed and centered approach to plan our weekly activities, crafts and field trips. The children at Russell love playing gym games, especially when it is adults against the children!
