Deborah Hanuscin named editor of Elementary Science Education
Deborah Hanuscin, associate professor of science education and physics, has been named the editor of Elementary Science Education, an international refereed journal devoted to communicating theories, research, concepts and practices in elementary science education. This five-year position will coordinate two dedicated issues annually to be published within the Journal of Science Teacher Education, the official journal of the Association for Science Teacher Education.
"This is a special opportunity for Debi," says Irv Cockriel, interim chair of the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum. "To gain this type of service at such an early time in her career is quite remarkable, something very few have accomplished."
Just weeks prior to the editorship notification, Hanuscin was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor.
"We are very fortunate to have Debi teaching at Mizzou, giving our students - future teachers as well as future faculty - the benefit of her scholarship in discovery research," says Jim Spain, vice provost for undergraduate studies at MU.
Hanuscin holds a joint appointment in the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Her work is primarily focused on the teaching and learning of science with special regard to scientific literacy and K-12 teacher education. Hanuscin's teaching responsibilities in both departments center on teacher education, including content and pedagogy.
Hanuscin began her career in 1995 as an elementary teacher in Tallahassee, Fla., and later pursued graduate studies in science education at Indiana University, earning a doctorate in curriculum and instruction in 2004.
