MU’s College of Education Pioneers Research Relationships and Intercultural Exchanges Overseas
International travel and multicultural experiences are increasingly crucial components of the College of Education experience. With faculty members accepting speaking engagements and pursuing research opportunities worldwide, and students engaging in intercultural exchanges and study abroad experiences, the College of Education has the globe nearly covered. Education faculty members make several trips, surrounding research interests and international partnerships overseas. Recent faculty travel includes:

Where: Hong Kong
What: To present three workshops for primary and secondary teachers in the Education and Manpower Bureau (their State Department of Education) and the Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters. In addtion, Gysbers is consulting with a research team of which he is a member from the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Where: Tokyo and Ibaraki in Japan
What: This travel is part of collaborative research with Japanese scholars funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. The project title is “School System Reforms on Teachers, Students, and Curriculum,” and we are conducting a comparative study of school reforms in Japan and the U.S.
When: The most recent travel to Japan was May 16, 2006 - May 29, 2006. This is a 4-year project, from 2005 and 2009, and Dr. Akiba goes to Japan every summer for this collaboration.
Brendan Maxcy, assistant professor of educational leadership and policy analysis (ELPA) and Ekkarin Sungtong, Ph.D. candidate in ELPA
Where: Conduct research in the border provinces of Pattani, Satun, Songkla and Yala, which are located in Southern Thailand.
What: The research addresses the challenges posed by the combination of national educational reforms and cultural unrest in the region associated with conflict between the Thai government and the region’s Islamic separatists. The project is a collaborative effort between MU researchers and researchers at the Prince of Songkla University in Pattani.
When: Traveling to Pattani in summer 2006. Ekkarin, a native of Thailand stayed in Pattani from June to August. Brendan was in Pattani for three weeks in July. Return travel is tentatively planned for summer 2007.

What: Continued work on positive behavioral support systems with administrators and researchers in Sydney-area schools and the Queensland State Department of Education.

What: Dr. Jing-Ru Wang, Professor of Science Education at the National Pingtung University of Education in Pingtun, Taiwan, invited us to present keynote addresses at the International Conference on Research and Evaluation of Teacher Quality in Elementary Science and Mathematics Education. The goal is to build a relationship among science education researchers at Mizzou and in Taiwan.

What: Invited to speak as one of seven keynote speakers at the annual meeting of the Japanese Clinical Psychology Association; this was the first year they had invited international speakers.
Over 150 attendees at our presentation, great response from them, many good discussions afterwards, several opportunities for professional collaboration, wonderful opportunity to learn about applied psychology in Japan, good connections with leaders in applied psychology.
