Brief Biography


Kathryn B. Chval is the Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. In addition, she is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education and Co-Director of the Missouri Center for Mathematics and Science Teacher Education at the University of Missouri.  Dr. Chval is also the Principal Investigator for the Facilitating Latinos’ Success in Mathematics Project and Co-Principal Investigator for the Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum and the Researching Science and Mathematics Teacher Learning in Alternative Certification Models Project which are funded by the National Science Foundation.  Prior to joining University of Missouri, Dr. Chval was the Acting Section Head for the Teacher Professional Continuum Program in the Division of Elementary, Secondary and Informal Science Division at the National Science Foundation. She also spent fourteen years at the University of Illinois at Chicago directing NSF-funded projects.  Dr. Chval’s research interests include (1) effective preparation models and support structures for teachers across the professional continuum, (2) effective elementary teaching of underserved populations, especially English language learners, and (3) curriculum standards and policies.

CAREER:  A Study of Strategies and Social Processes that Facilitate the Participation of Latino English Language Learners in Elementary Mathematics Classroom Communities

The primary objective of this project is to study resources and strategies that facilitate participation of Latino English Language Learners (ELLs) in elementary mathematics classrooms.  


 Researching Science and Mathematics Teacher Learning in Alternative Certification Models

This research project (referred to as Re-SMAR2T) examines science and mathematics teacher learning in the context of an alternative certification program designed for individuals with baccalaureate degrees in science or mathematics. Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum (CSMC)

 The CSMC serves the K-12 educational community by focusing scholarly inquiry and professional development around issues of mathematics curriculum. Major areas of work include understanding the influence and potential of mathematics curriculum materials, enabling teacher learning through curriculum material investigation and implementation, and building capacity for developing, implementing, and studying the impact of mathematics curriculum materials. This Math and Science Partnership (MSP) award supports teachers as they work to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in the Columbia Public Schools. Participants include mathematics teachers in grades 6 – 12 as well as Special Educators and teachers of English Language Learners.
