You get more than enough field experience!

The Teacher Development Program (TDP) incorporates real-life experiences into every class, helping students immediately apply what they learn. During TDP’s four phases, students begin with foundation courses and advance to their full semester or year-long internship experience in the field. In Mizzou’s program, practical and rewarding on-site classroom training is included in each phase and comes sooner than is traditional, which enhances teaching skills and confidence.

Your entire senior year is spent in classroom as an elementary education major.

The College’s Elementary Education Senior Year On-Site Program provides students in-depth experience in a school setting during their last year of course work. Courses are delivered on-site to students at various locations in Missouri as they simultaneously engage in a unique combination of observation and teaching.

Stop by the Career and Program Service (CAPS) office, where the staff is dedicated solely to helping place College of Education students in the ideal professional setting – both during school and after graduation. CAPS coordinates and promotes job fairs, on-campus interviews and opportunities for employment to students each year.
 

We’re learning in the classroom, and online.

In the late 1990’s, the College of Education was the first college to offer a totally online masters distance degree program at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Today, the College offers 14 degree and certification distance education programs through MU Direct.

Active – inside and outside the classroom.

In 1910, the University of Missouri-Columbia opened the first chapter — the Alpha Chapter — of Pi Lambda Theta, which is an international honor society and professional association in education. This year, the chapter is organizing a public forum on prevention of school violence.

The College that helped the nation to read.

In the late 1940’s, Dr. A. Sterl Artley, a former MU reading faculty member, authored the popular children’s series “Dick, Jane and Sally,” which changed the way children learned to read.

Optional 5th Year Master’s Program – You’ve got it!

Mizzou’s College of Education has the largest Teaching Fellowship Program, in the number of participants — 87 elementary, middle and secondary teachers — and in the geographic area it covers  — from St. Louis to Kansas City. The TFP combines a student’s first year of full-time teaching with a 15-month master’s curriculum. The program covers the cost of graduate tuition and includes a modified salary.

Gone are the days of the card catalog.

In the 1930’s, Ralph H. Parker, director of MU Libraries and dean of MU’s School of Library and Information Science (now housed in the College of Education), published the first paper in the world to talk about using computers in libraries; in 1951 he instituted the first computerized circulation system in the nation.  He is often called the Father of Library Automation.

Hey, Scientists and Mathematicians – Want to become a teacher?

The College of Education’s Science and Mathematics Academy for the Recruitment and Retention of Teachers (SMAR2T) is the only alternative certification program in the state of Missouri to specially target training of future science and mathematics teachers.

Elegan Lee, a secondary science education graduate of MU’s College of Education, received the first ever "Preservice Teacher of the Year" award from the National Science Teachers Association in 2004-2005.

Forward thinking - addressing the urgent need for mental well-being in classrooms.

The Center for the Advancement of Mental Health Practices in Schools (CAMHPS) offered the first ever degree program (M.Ed./Ed.S.) that focuses on mental health practices in schools.

THE place in Missouri for Library Science.

MU’s School of Information Science and Learning Technologies offers the only American Library Association accredited library science graduate program in the state of Missouri.

Ranked 5th in the Nation by U.S.News & World Report.

Counseling Psychology at MU’s College of Education has been consistently ranked first in the nation in research productivity and in multicultural counseling.

Collaborative Learning – we’re the leader.

The College of Education created the first statewide, cooperative education doctorate program in educational leadership. 

Once a leader in Math, always leader in Math.

In the 1950’s Dr. Lois Knowles gained national recognition by influencing the creation of “new math.” New Math changed the way mathematics was taught to elementary students by stressing the importance of understanding mathematical concepts rather than learning rote calculations. Today’s math education program is one of the most funded programs by the National Science Foundation.

Mizzou offers two undergraduate academic degrees, including a bachelor of science in education that prepares students for certification and employment as a teacher, and a bachelor of educational studies that offers a flexible design for students who are interested in human service careers or graduate study.

Through the Verizon Children’s Literacy Center, faculty from different College of Education departments work with MU students to teleconference with schools across the state of Missouri, the nation and as far away as Taiwan to learn and review the latest award-winning children’s literature.
