Becoming a Teacher with MU's College of Education

Becoming a teacher is a very exciting and challenging prospect.  The benefits for a teacher are very rewarding—you are able to impact future generations through your work in the field of education.  Students at MU’s College of Education receive degrees and certification through the Teacher Development Program (TDP), which offers professional preparation in a collaborative environment.  The program is the result of intensive work that draws upon the experiences of public school educators, university faculty research, research-based knowledge and a thorough examination of programs across the nation.

MU's TDP, ranked among the best by U.S.News & World Report, ensures future teacher develop the knowledge and skills needed to excel in today’s classrooms.  Practical and rewarding on-site classroom training begins early in the program.  These experiences are designed to enhance teaching skills and confidence.

The Teacher Development Program is delivered in four phases, each phase building upon the concepts learned in the previous experience.  To incorporate real-world classroom experience, the program is delivered primarily in partnership with school districts across the state of Missouri.  These schools are located in urban, suburban and rural regions and are members of the Missouri Partnership for Educational Renewal. 

Two certification areas, Elementary Education and Special Education, provide the opportunity for students to graduate and enter the workforce with a full year of on-site training.  Other programs provide a full semester of internship, or extensive internship experiences across semesters.  During all on-site training, students work closely with outstanding mentors and exceptional classroom teachers to put their skills into practice and receive the benefits of working the best in the field.  Mizzou education graduates are some of the most sought-after beginning teachers in the state and country.
