Secondary Biology Education
Degree Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Biology leads to certification in 9-12th grades in the state of Missouri. Students become masters of their content through diverse biology and science classes, learn pedagogy and teaching strategies for biology through education courses, and put both into practice through field experiences.
The program encompasses four phases:
Phase I: Freshman - Sophomore Year
Students complete their general education requirements and begin biology content courses like General Biology and Genetics. They explore various careers in education, and become immersed in the discipline and culture of teaching and learning before they focus on the methods of teaching biology during Phase II.
Courses explore the teacher's roles in facilitating learning at all levels of development, diversity, the role of schools, and career exploration. Work with students of varying ages through field experiences.
Phase II: Junior Year - First Semester Senior Year
Provides students with experience in the methods of teaching biology with a corresponding field experience. Education courses include an introduction to science education, methodology for teaching science, and assessment within the field. Inquiry courses focus on how problems of schools, family, community, and society affect educators, classroom management, and special needs learners.
Phase III: Second Semester Senior Year
This phase includes a semester-long, full-time student teaching internship. Candidates are assigned to a biology classroom for a 15-week period under the mentorship of an experienced master teacher.
Phase IV: Induction
Faculty continue to support graduates into their first two years of teaching.

Admission Requirements
- GPA requirements
- 2.5 GPA with less than 30 credits completed
- 2.6 with 30-59 credits completed
- 2.75 with 60+ credits completed
Degree Requirements
Recommended that you have Biology 1500 and 2200, Chemistry 1310 and 1320 completed before entering Phase II.

Fees and Financial Aid
MU is an affordable place for all students there are a variety of federal financial aid programs, along with assistance from the University. The College of Education also offers scholarships for its undergraduate students.
