Middle School Science Education

Degree Overview

middle school scienceThe Bachelor of Science in Middle School Science leads to certification in grades 5-9 in the state of Missouri. Students become masters of their content through diverse science classes, learn pedagogy and teaching strategies for science through education courses, and put both into practice through field experiences.

As with all Middle School Education degrees in Missouri, the BS in Middle School Language Arts allows students to pick a second option area for certification. Options include: Art (K-9), Math, Science, and Social Studies.

The program encompasses four phases:




Phase I: Freshman - Sophomore Year

Students complete their general education requirements, explore various careers in education, and become immersed in the discipline and culture of teaching and learning.

Coursework examines the teacher's roles in facilitating learning at all levels of development and considers the influences of cultural, political, historical and economic factors on students, teachers and schools. Work with students of varying ages through field experiences.

Phase II: Junior Year - First Semester Senior Year

In this phase, focus shifts to the field of middle school Science education. Through coursework and corresponding field experiences, students consider ways to support the development and scientific learning of adolescents from grades 5 through 9. Each semester during Phase II, students spend at least 20 hours working in middle grades Science classrooms, helping foster scientific learning in carefully designed field experiences.

Phase III: Second Semester Senior Year

This phase includes a semester-long, full-time student teaching internship. Candidates are assigned to a middle school science classroom for a 10-week period under the mentorship of an experienced master science teacher. Candidates spend an additional 5-week period in middle school classrooms related to their secondary endorsement area (e.g., Art, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies).

Phase IV: Induction

Faculty continue to support graduates into their first two years of teaching.

Admission Requirements

  • Students are automatically admitted to Phase I with admittance to the University
  • Application for Phase II occurs in the spring of your Sophomore year. Criteria for admission include:
    • Overall MU GPA (at least 2.75 with 60+ credits completed)
    • Scored on the College Base Exam
    • Related Experience

Degree Requirements

It is recommended to have begun your science coursework such as Chemistry 1310 and Biology 1500.

Fees and Financial Aid

MU is an affordable place for all students ­ there are a variety of federal financial aid programs, along with assistance from the University. The College of Education also offers scholarships for its undergraduate students.
