The Bachelors of Science in Art Education leads to certification in grades K-12 in the State of Missouri.

The program encompasses four phases:






Phase I: Freshman - Sophomore Year

In addition to fulfulling general education requirements, students begin their content mastery with courses like Basic 2D Design and Beginning Drawing. Education courses explore student learning and the role of the teacher and society in the classroom. Learning is extended through practice during Field Experiences.

Phase II: Junior Year - First Semester Senior Year

Students pursue an intensive exploration of studio art courses, learn the pedagogy of art education, and indentify the characterists of children's artistic development. Field experiences occur in all grade levels including Lee Expressive Arts Elementary School. The Tiger Artists program provides further teaching experience.

Phase III: Second Semester Senior Year

Students are placed in a partner district for a semester-long student teaching internship under the mentorship of an experienced art teacher. Half the semester is spent with 1-7th grades and half is spent with grades 8-12.

Phase IV: Induction

Faculty continues to support graduates in their first two years of service.

Admission Requirements

  • Students are automatically admitted to Phase I with admittance to the University
  • Application for Phase II occurs in the spring of your Sophomore year. Criteria for admission include:
    • Overall MU GPA (at least 2.75 with 60+ credits completed)
    • Grades in selected classes
    • Scored on the College Base Exam
    • Experience working with children

Be Prepared: Review Phase II requirements and find out what you can do to be a qualified candidate for acceptance.

Degree Requirements

Recommended to have a few studio art courses completed before entering Phase II such as:

  • Art 1030 Basic 2-D Design
  • Art 1050 Beginning Drawing
  • Art 2300 Fibers

  • Information regarding application to Phase II is provided through email when enrolled in TDP 2000 and/or 2040.

Fees and Financial Aid

MU is an affordable place for all students ­ there are a variety of federal financial aid programs, along with assistance from the University. The College of Education also offers scholarships for its undergraduate students.
