Letters of Recommendation
Education Career Services is discontinuing our Credentials File Service effective August 14, 2009. The challenge of maintaining a Credentials Service is not unique to Mizzou. Other institutions in Missouri include: University of Missouri-St. Louis, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Norwest Missouri State, Southeast Missouri State University, Truman State University and several smaller institutions. Over the past several years, technology has led to drastic changes in teacher recruitment and hiring. We are encouraging education majors and those seeking employment in the field of education to self manage their credentials file or obtain the services of on-line professional credentials services.
It is important for faculty, instructors, and staff to note:
- The number of students asking for letters of recommendation should not increase.
- School districts request current letters of recommendation (within the past 12 or 24 months).
- Students typically apply to a minimum of 10 school districts (give 1 to copy or print 10 to mail).
The job applicant has the option to request a letter as confidential or not confidential and there are several avenues they can take when asking someone to write a letter of recommendation. The job applicant has the option to ask their letter writer to:
- Write a letter and give them one copy in order for them to have it for their self-managed credential files.
- Send the letter of recommendation directly to the school district via an email attachment, upload to an online application system or mail (an addressed, stamped envelope should be provided to the letter writer).
- Put letters in a signed, sealed envelope.
