Student Council for Exceptional Children
Creating bright futures for students with disabilities and/or gifts and talents
Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) is part of the national organization, Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). CEC is one of the largest advocacy organizations for students with disabilities in the nation. At the local level, we hold monthly meetings where students get the opportunity to interact with faculty in special education, special education teachers, and other students interested in children with special needs. As a member of SCEC, you will also have the opportunity to volunteer at events such as the State Special Olympics, and participate in conferences and other activities that CEC sponsors.
As a student, it's a great time for you to join, because membership rates are low and benefits are high! It looks great on your resume, it's a great way to connect with others who hold your same interests, and you can also keep informed about legislative issues for students with special needs.
Benefits of Membership in SCEC
- Journal Subscriptions (TEACHING Exceptional Children and Exceptional Children)
- Professional Growth and Development -Resume-builder, career opportunities
- Networking -work closely with faculty and other student members
- Advocacy -work with others to improve educational outcomes for children with exceptionalities
- Involvement -volunteering, attending conferences
- Low cost insurance coverage through CEC in your work as a teacher or in your internship as a preservice teacher. Please go to this website for more information: http://www.ftj.com/TIE/Mainpagepl.asp.
If you'd like more information about upcoming meetings, a membership form, or if you'd like to be added to our listserv, please e-mail the faculty advisor, Erica Lembke. You can also check out the glass case dedicated to SCEC in the basement of Townsend Hall.
