Research and Recognition
Faculty in the Department of Special Education are engaged in a variety of ongoing and timely research activities. A strong emphasis is placed on providing our students with frequent and varied opportunities to participate in applied research at all levels. To this end, many of our undergraduate and graduate students participate in projects stemming from numerous research agendas such as the following:

- Early Math Indicators
- Parent perceptions of student performance
- School-wide implementation
- Variance in students' reaction time based on math problem type and student ability level
- Experimental comparison of Tier II and Tier III interventions

Experimental analysis of setting events within educational settings:
- Pivotal classroom environments and teacher instructional variables
- Effects of student academic engagement performance
- Effects on student adaptive behaviors
- Study of severe behavioral challenges in children and youth with autism and emotional/behavioral disorders

- Structural analysis
- Social skills assessment and intervention for children and youth with autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Emotional Behavioral Disorders
- Implementation of curricular frameworks for school-based programmatic decisions in Special Education
Dr. Stormont
Early child and environmental characteristics that create early risk for failure in school :
- AD/HD
- Early challenging behavior
- School characteristics that create risk
- Family characteristics that are associated with risk
- Teachers' role in creating environments that are supportive of all learners
