Degree Overview

Social studies education offers learning opportunities for prospective and current masters students to meet the needs of tomorrows citizens in an increasing diverse society in our interdependent world.  Social Studies educators forge new paths for students to explore. Admission Requirements

Admission requirements will be based upon the following criteria.  Complete admission requirements for the Master's program.

  • Completion of an appropriate Bachelor's degree with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Evidence of at least two years of successful experience in an appropriate professional field.
  • GRE scores taken within the last five years reflecting a preferred combined score of 810 or better on the Verbal and Quantitative sections.
  • A minimum of three letters of recommendation.
  • Statement of purpose clearly indicating that the proposed Masters degree is appropriate to the applicant's professional aspirations.
  • For students whose native language is not English, a score of 500 or better on the TOEFL taken within the past two years

The LTC Department cannot assure admission to all applicants who meet minimum standards specified for the degree program.  Resource constraints do not permit the admission of all qualified applicants.
 
A committee of faculty reviews the credentials of each applicant.  It is the responsibility of this committee to exercise professional judgment related to the criteria that applicants must meet in order to be considered for admission to the program.

Degree Requirements

The M Ed includes 32 hours in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in social studies education.

How to Apply

A departmental master's admission committee admits students to the masters program. A grade point average of 3.0 is required for unconditional admission. Students with grade point averages below 3.0 are required to furnish additional evidence of qualification including submitting letters of recommendation.

Everything listed below must be sent to the Learning, Teaching, & Curriculum Graduate Office located in 303 Townsend Hall.  Bolded items, in addition to the LTC Graduate office, must be sent to the MU Graduate Admission Office (210 Jesse Hall / Columbia, MO 65211).  Complete admission requirements for the Master's program.

  • Personal Data Sheet - Contact with a faculty member to discuss advanced graduate work is a requirement for admission consideration.
