Educational Specialist Degree in Mathematics Education

Degree Overview

The Educational Specialist degree in Mathematics Education is intended for teachers who have already completed a masters degree and are seeking additional work related to leadership, curriculum development, research and/or improving their own teaching skills.

Admission Requirements

Candidates should have a valid teaching certificate, a masters degree and at least two years of teaching experience. To be considered for admission to the program, candidates must submit the following to the MU College of Education Graduate Office (303 Townsend Hall):

  • Completed application, with reference letters.
  • Official transcript of undergraduate and masters programs.
  • Official test score from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

Accepted applicants are assigned a faculty advisor.

Degree Requirements

The program consists of 32 credit hours of graduate work. No more than 8 credit hours may be transferred into the program from another university (12 from MU). Transfer credits are reviewed and approved by the faculty advisor. The advisor and candidate develop the program of study based on the parameters described below. The S-1 form, describing the program of study, should be on file with the Graduate Office at least one semester prior to graduation.

Program parameters:

  • At least 16 credit hours at the 8000 level.
  • At least 20 credit hours of mathematics education and/or mathematics.
  • One course focused on research and one on learning.
  • Capstone project (designed by candidate and advisor).
