Giving to Mathematics Education

Mathematics Education has been the recipient of several significant endowments that strengthen and support a wide range of efforts in mathematics education.  Among these endowments are:

Richard Miller Endowed Chair in Mathematics Education.  This endowment is fully funded.  Dr. Barbara Doughery is the  Richard Miller Chair in Mathematics Education.

Lucy Fields-Gallup and Jeffrey Gallup Mathematics Education Endowment Fund.  This is a planned estate gift established by Lucy and Jeff that also honors Lucy’s parents, Lucinda and Bob Fields.  Once enacted it will provide an endowed chair in mathematics education as well as scholarship support for students pursuing careers as mathematics teachers.

Lois Knowles Distinguished Professor.  This endowment was established by Robert and Barbara McFarland in recognition of his aunt, Lois Knowles who was a long-time faculty member at the University of Missouri in mathematics education. Barbara Reys is currently recognized as the Lois Knowles Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Education at MU.

Lois Knowles Scholarship.  This endowment was established to provide scholarship funds for full-time graduate students in mathematics education, with preference given to students with an interest in elementary mathematics.

Robert Reys and Barbara Bestgen Reys Mathematics Education Scholarship.  This endowment was established in 1990 and funds have been used annually to provide scholarships for future middle and secondary mathematics teachers.

Ira J. Papick and Ann Marie McGarry-Papick Endowment.  This fund was established in honor of Ira Papick, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and his wife Ann Marie.  The funds are used annually to help support travel for graduate students in mathematics making presentations at national meetings.

Continuing the Effort

Providing scholarships and support for undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics education is an on-going effort.  We need to recruit high quality students who will pursue careers in mathematics education, and support them during their formative years.

In that spirit, we have established the Mathematics Education Scholarship Endowment at the University of Missouri.  This is a fund that seeks individual contributions of any amount.  As these tax-deductible contributions are received they are pooled together in the Mathematics Education Scholarship Endowment.  Interest from this endowment will be used to support full-time mathematics education students.  This scholarship fund will provide support for scholarships in perpetuity to generations of future mathematics teachers.

Our initial goal is to reach $100,000.
