Financial Assistance
The College of Education offers a variety of scholarships for students enrolled as education majors, both as undergraduates and graduates. Scholarships are a great way to financially support your education and are awarded to individuals on the basis of any number of criteria, including: financial need, academic achievement, choice of program area, public service, nationality or ethnicity.
Some scholarships are renewable or may be awarded to the same students in succeeding years; however, these awards are based upon continued eligibility with scholarship criteria; grade point average; the contingency of available funds; and a current, completed application that must be submitted each year. Please note, should a College of Education scholarship recipient change enrollment to another University or another college within MU, the scholarship will be rescinded.
Graduate scholarships offered through the College of Education are awarded on the basis of an application due by March 1 to the Office of the Dean of Education, 118 Hill Hall. Click Here.

All students need only fill out their one appropriate application (freshmen, continuing, transfer, or graduate) in order to qualify for scholarships. You do not need to apply for individual college scholarships. Your eligiblity for each of the scholarships below will be determined based on your application data.

Sterl Artley Scholarship
Type: Graduate

Description: Established by Professor Emeritus A. Sterl Artley, along with friends and colleagues in 1977, this fund supports graduate students entering the department of Curriculum & Instruction. Artley was one of the three authors of the Dick and Jane children¿s primers of the early 1950¿s and was one of the leading experts of reading education.
Neil C Aslin Memorial Fund

Description: In 1977, family and friends established this fund in memory of Dr. Neil Aslin who was at one time Superintendent of the Columbia Public Schools and professor and chairman of the department of Educational Administration in the College of Education. Awards support graduate students in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.
Helen M Barrett Memorial Scholarship in Education

Description: Established under the last will and testament of Helen M. Barrett in 1990, this fund provides financial support to undergraduate and graduate students with high scholastic achievement majoring in education.
Irv Cockriel Endowed Education Fund

Description: This fund was established in 2000 by friends and colleagues to honor Dr. Irv Cockriel on the occasion of his retirement from the College of Education after 32 years as a faculty leader. This fund honors his years of service and many contributions to the College. Dr. Cockriel was the lead person in the College who created many of the scholarships the college has today.
Dan H. Cockrell Ed.D Dissertation of the Year Award

Description: Dr. Cockrell, along with friends and co-workers, established this fund to provide an annual award to a graduate of MU's Statewide Cooperative Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership for the best dissertation produced the preceding calendar year.
Carolyn A. Dorsey Minority Fellowship Fund

Description: This fund was established by alumni and friends to honor Carolyn A. Dorsey on the occasion of her retirement in 1995 from the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. Professor Dorsey was one of the first African American faculty members in the College and this fund is for the support of minority students in the College of Education.
Velma Bowers Douce Scholarship

William H. Fisher and Lennie H. and J. Ephraim Downing Memorial Scholarship Fund

Description: This fund was established 1997 from the trust of Jeannie Vea Fisher in memory of her late husband William H. Fisher and her parents, Lennie H. and J. Ephraim Downing to support elementary education students in the College of Education.
James A. Gardner Scholarship Fund

Description: Since 1999, this fund has provided support to graduates of Mineral Area College of St. Francois County, Missouri, enrolled in the College of Education who plan to enter the teaching profession.
Theo W. H. Irion Memorial Scholarship

Description: This fund was established in 1953 from donations of colleagues, family and friends of Theo W. H. Irion. In 1964, the wife of Theo Irion donated additional money to increase the scholarship amount.
Thomas J. & Jeane S. Lawson Graduate Scholarship in Educational Administration

Description: Established in 1993, this fund supports graduate students pursuing a degree in educational administration in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.
H.H. London Graduate Research Assistantship Fund

Description: Established in 1985 by Dr. H.H. London, and amended in 2000, this fund supports students pursuing a degree in career and technical education in the College of Education.
Friedel C. Maasdorf Foreign Language Scholarship

Description: Established in 1982 and amended in 1986 by the donation of Joachim and Wilette Massdorf, this fund was established in memory of Friedel, who was a longtime foreign language educator.
The Marketing Education Scholarship Fund

Description: Established in 1984 from various donations, this fund supports students who focus on marketing education students enrolled in the College of Education.
Mamie J. McCormick Graduate Student Fellowship Fund

Description: Established in 1982 by the will of Mamie McCormick and amended in 1986 by various other donors to be an endowed scholarship, this fund provides assistance to graduate students in the College of Education.
John P. & Eleanor Jeffrey McKay Memorial Scholarship

Description: This fund was established in 1996 by Barbara Hendrich in memory of her parents who were both graduates of the College of Education. The fund supports junior and senior level undergraduates and graduate students in education.
Marilyn Lacey McMullen Scholarship Fund

Description: This scholarship was established by Larry McMullen as a 40th wedding anniversary gift to his wife Marilyn in 1995 to recognize Marilyn's appreciation and support of the College of Education, her experience as a teacher and her commitment to the community through volunteer service in various Kansas City organizations.
Meharry Fellowship in Graduate Education

Description: Established in 1997 by Dr. and Mrs. Richard Andrews, dean emeritus, of the College of Education in the memory of Letitia Meharry and her family. The Meharry family was a philanthropic family that donated funds toward the creation of the Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. This medical college was created to allow African American students the opportunity to become doctors and nurses. This scholarship was established to expand on that tradition of the Meharry family to allow African American students the opportunity to pursue higher education.
Alda C. Michel Scholarship Fund

Description: This scholarship was established by the donation of Alda C. Michel in 1983 to support the pursuit of higher education for undergraduate students.
Edward P. Miller Library and Information Science Endowment

Description: The Edward P. Miller Fund, established in 1993, was the second scholarship established by Dr. Miller. He was a professor in the School of Library & Information Science for 12 years, and served as Dean for 10 of those 12 years (1974-1984).
Hazel Hill Miller Memorial Scholarship

Description: Established in 1988 by the family of Hazel Hill Miller who was a 1920 graduate of the College of Education, this fund supports full time students who show academic achievement.
Walter Scott Monroe Research Fellowship Fund

Description: Established in 1978 by the wife of Walter Scott Monroe, Lula Robinett Monroe, this fund is in memory of her husband who earned his doctorate from the University of Missouri in 1911. He was one of the original members of Phi Delta Kappa and wrote one of the first texts on educational research. Monroe was an influential figure in the field of education in the early 1900s and wrote/published many books and articles on the importance of the needs of graduate students in educational research and his extensive experience in counseling and directing such students.
Ben Nelms Scholarship

Description: Various donors endowed this fund in 1986 in honor of Dr. Nelms who was a professor in the College for 20 years. The fund supports students in the College of Education majoring in English education.
Ruth E. Norris Scholarship for Graduate Students

Description: This fund was established in 1968 with a $10,000 donation from Ruth E. Norris after her death. She received her masters degree in 1931 from the College of Education and bequeathed the money to establish a scholarship in her name.
Carl G. Nurski College of Education Endowed Scholarship Fund

Description: This fund was established in 2007 with an estate gift to provide one or more annual awards to students enrolled in the College of Education.
Andrew J. and Mona M. Nurski Memorial Scholarship in Education Endowed Fund

Description: This fund was established in 2006 by a gift from the estate of Mona Nurski to provide one or more annual awards to students in the College of Education who are studying and planning to be teachers.
Peabody Scholarship in Education

Description: Established in 1912 by the trustees of the Peabody Educational Fund to be used for a scholarship award to College of Education students.
Pettit-Hardin Scholarship Fund in Memory of Jackie Pettit White
Type: Graduate

Description: Established in 1982 by Neila Pettit and Veralee Hardin in memory of Neila¿s daughter, Jackie, who died from cancer in 1982. Neila was a longtime professor in the College of Education. Recipients must be graduate students in education who have demonstrated a commitment to work with students experiencing academic difficulties.
Phi Delta Kappa Graduate Scholarship Fund

Description: This fund was established in 1983 from the donation of the Gamma Chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa to support graduate students enrolled in the College of Education, with preference given to members of Phi Delta Kappa. Phi Delta Kappa is an education honor society established in 1908-1909 at the University of Missouri.
Pi Lambda Theta, Alpha Chapter Scholarship Fund

Description: Pi Lambda Theta is an education honor society established in 1910 as an honorary fraternity for women in education. This scholarship was established in 1983 by the donation of Pi Lambda Theta, Alpha Chapter, to award scholarships to students in the College of Education.
John Rufi School Administrators Fund

Description: Established in 1962 and revised in 1985, this scholarship was created through the transfer of assets from the John Rufi Recognition Loan Fund. Funds are used to pay graduate research assistants for students preparing for a degree in administration and supervisory leadership.
Herbert Schooling Fund for Leadership in Higher Education

Description: Established in 1983 and amended in 1986 by various donations. Herbert Schooling served as Dean of the College of Education from 1963¿66, served as Provost of the University of Missouri and served as Chancellor from 1972¿78.
Robert C. Shaw Education Fund

Description: Friends and colleagues of Dr. Robert C. Shaw established this fund in his honor upon his retirement from the University of Missouri in 2000, after nearly a fifty-year career as an educator in Missouri. Dr. Shaw served as a mentor and role model for two generations of school leaders. This fund honors his years of service and many contributions to the College of Education and education across the state by providing awards to graduate students in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.
Le Roy DeHart Smithers and Rosalie Cousins Smithers Scholarship in Education

Description: This fund was established by the charitable remainder unitrust of Le Roy Dehart and Rosalie Smithers in 2005 to provide general scholarship support to students enrolled in the College of Education.
Gertrude Strickler Memorial Fund

Description: Established in 1985 by the donation of Gertrude Strickler, this fund supports women students majoring in health and physical education. In 1998, the health and physical education program was transferred from the College of Education to the College of Human Environmental Sciences.
Loran G. Townsend Scholarship

Description: This fund was established in 1965 by donations from fellow faculty members and friends of Dr. Loran Townsend who served as Dean of the College of Education from 1945-63. The recipients are chosen on the basis of recognized ability and professional promise in the field of education
Ralph K. & Lois L. Watkins Scholarship Fund

Description: Established in 1963 as a loan fund, this fund was changed in 1985 to provide scholarships to full-time undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Education. Dr. Watkins was a longtime professor in the College of Education and an educator for 52 years.
The Kate Stamper Wilhite Fund

Description: Kate Stamper Wilhite established this scholarship in 1990 to provide awards to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College of Education.
Bob G. Woods Scholarship

Description: Established in 1986 by the donation of Bob G. Woods, dean of the College of Education from 1966-1986, this scholarship supports graduate students pursuing a career in school administration. Woods also served at the University of Missouri as an associate professor in Secondary School Curriculum and as professor and associate dean.
