Educational Specialist-School and District Leadership
Degree Overview
This Ed.S. program is designed to prepare students to become inquiring, reflective practitioners, to positively impact learning for all students in their organizations, to value, encourage and facilitate the professional development of self and others in their organizations, to demonstrate effective communication skills in both school and non-school settings, to value, understand and support diversity in their school organizations, to make contributions to the profession beyond their role as members of this leader-preparation program, to become or enhance their roles as “teacher-leaders” in their schools, and to effectively establish links with appropriate school community agencies.
This innovative Ed.S. program initiative through the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis is committed to implementing a leader preparation program that attracts a diverse population of participants, continues to set the standard for programs across the state and nation, and establishes links with other professional agencies across the state.
This program will include collaborative, authentic learning experiences, followed by authentic assessment using multiple forms of performance demonstration. During the program students are actively involved in the design and delivery of various aspects of the curriculum and technology is used to enhance instruction, learning, and delivery of various aspects of the curriculum.
Benefits
Upon completion of this NEW EdS degree, students would be eligible for MO State Superintendent certification and continuing principal certification or for Initial Principal certification, if needed. Students can, with the approval of their committee, apply MU credits they have earned for this Ed.S. towards a Ph.D. in Educational Administration.
This program prepares educational leaders who will have the knowledge and necessary practical skills to improve student performance.
Core courses will be offered on a weekend format to accommodate the needs of educators with full-time schedules.
Target Audience
Teachers and beginning administrators who have masters degrees.
Admission Requirements
A Masters degree in Education is a pre-requisite and teaching experience is required for certification. For more information about certification see the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Degree Requirements
This is a 30 hour program which includes the following core courses and 6 hours of electives
8423:Advanced Leadership for Learning Environments
8419:Structures and Processes for Effective Schools
8417:Site-Level Organization and Leadership
Plus a 3 hour internship
9406:Superintendent as Collaborative Team Builder and Communicator
9406:Superintendent as Instructional Leader
9406:Superintendent as Fiscal & Legal Resource Leader
Plus a 3 Hour Internship
